Cardolite non-reactive epoxy diluent from Cardolite is an effective way to reduce viscosity without using solvents. All cardanol derivatives have the advantage of being highly hydrophobic, thus bringing excellent water resistance to formulated systems. These epoxy diluents offer increased flexibility and impact resistance due to the long aliphatic chains in the backbone. The aromatic ring of cardanol can improve the chemical resistance of these derivatives. Ultra LITE 2020 series are versatile diluent products that also help extend gel time. The NX-202X series contains various cardanol models suitable for use as diluents in various systems, including epoxy and polyurethane formulations. In addition to this, cardanol can act as an accelerator between epoxy resins and amines, making it suitable as a replacement for nonylphenol.

Ultra LITE ultra-light cardanol models NX-2026 and Ultra LITE 2020 (UL 2020) are renewable and low-volatility alternatives to benzyl alcohol. The formula can be adjusted appropriately according to differences in viscosity and curing performance. Cardrol LITE 2100(R) is a cashew nut shell liquid modified hydrocarbon resin with light color and low viscosity. They are more effective at reducing epoxy resin viscosity than typical phenolic hydrocarbon resins, thereby improving compatibility in high-solids and solvent-free formulations and facilitating better film formation. These products have good hardness development while providing better flexibility and impact resistance. The product’s high hydrophobicity provides the formulation with excellent water resistance and, more importantly, excellent corrosion protection on immersion and steam-exposed surfaces. In addition, both products have very good UV resistance and good gloss retention and can be used in lighter colored paints.

Ultra LITE 513 series is composed of monofunctional epoxy diluents that can effectively reduce viscosity and are excellent alternatives to traditional glycidyl ethers. NC-513 is the standard model. Ultra LITE 513 is a purer, lower viscosity, very light-colored version of NC-513. LITE 513E is a very low total chlorine version of NC-513 suitable for electronic applications.

This series of cardanol-based reactive epoxy diluents can react within the polymer network to minimize impact on the protective layer. In addition, the cardanol backbone has good hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, heat resistance and flexibility, thus ensuring good performance of the final epoxy system. As shown in the chart on the right, NC-513 can improve high temperature water resistance (lower weight gain) when added to liquid epoxy resin systems reacted with different epoxy curing agents.

LITE 513DF is a new high bio-content diluent based on cashew nut shell liquid that has a lower epoxy equivalent weight than the standard 513 model. This product is suitable for epoxy coatings, one- and two-component adhesives and composite materials. LITE 513DF has low viscosity and excellent dilution ability. The added weight curve with bisphenol A liquid epoxy resin is shown in the figure. As a diluent, it has good hardness development at ambient and low temperatures. Similar to other cashew nut shell oil-modified materials, LITE 513DF has good water resistance and flexibility. In coating applications, LITE 513DF showed very good anti-corrosion properties in long-term salt spray tests, see the image of the panel on this page. In adhesive applications, this epoxy diluent also acts as a modifier, increasing elongation and bond strength while minimizing effects on Tg and tensile strength.

This material is an excellent alternative to petroleum-based difunctional diluents such as 1,6 hexanediol diglycidyl ether and 1,4butanediol diglycidyl ether.

Tested according to IEC 62631 and IEC 60243 standards, LITE 513DF provides good insulation properties as shown by its dielectric properties. In the formulation of Epon 828, the resin is used at 20%, cured with MTHPA (methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride) and catalyzed with BDMA (benzyldimethylamine). LITE 513DF demonstrated excellent results, with higher volume resistivity and dielectric strength, and lower dissipation factor and dielectric constant than competing 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. When both dilute epoxy resin systems are exposed to high temperatures or salt solutions, LITE 513DF outperforms petroleum-based difunctional diluents. LITE 513DF is a good epoxy diluent and modifier for electrical potting, casting and encapsulation (impregnating resin).

Cardelai NC-514 and NC-514S are flexible bifunctional glycidyl ether epoxy resin tougheners. The aromatic eight-carbon chain allows the resin to be used in combination with traditional epoxy resins to increase the flexibility, abrasion, water and chemical resistance of the coating without adversely affecting other properties.

Cardelai NC-547 is a cardanol-derived polyglycidyl ether epoxy phenolic resin. The resin can be combined with standard epoxy resins to bring flexibility and longer operating life to the coating without compromising chemical and water resistance.
